WOMEN OF THE WOODS (W.O.W.)
The Women of The Woods (W.O.W.) were originally chartered in 1977 as The Woods Garden Club, affiliated with the Jacksonville Garden Club (the largest garden club in the United States). Because the groups’ primary emphasis changed to focus on our community as a whole, our name was changed to Women of The Woods.
WOW is served by a group of officers and other dedicated volunteers who ensure that we provide entertainment to members and help to enrich the lives of others. Our monthly meetings, held August through May, feature such diverse activities as guest chefs, wine tasting, landscape design, dance demo & lessons, and floral arrangement provided by Kuhn’s. In addition to monthly meetings, the WOW also sponsor numerous other events here at The Woods including:
- Meet the Candidates Night. Local politicians, in a forum setting, answer questions that pertain to our quality of life here in The Woods
- Christmas Bazaar. Local crafters display & sell their goods over a two-day period at the clubhouse. Proceeds from booth rentals enables WOW to fund more activities here.
- Thanksgiving Baskets. WOW collects food items and creates holiday baskets for the Hubbard House “graduates.”
- Christmas Toy Drive. WOW collects toys for the children who reside or previously resided at Hubbard House.
- “Undie Monday.” Collection of undergarments for those less fortunate are taken to a central distribution facility.
The Women of The Woods also organize the annual Margarita Party and other events throughout the year and have recently started a monthly book club group.
Due to the tremendous efforts of WOW members, furniture, kitchen and playground equipment, benches, and barbecue grills have been purchased and installed over our 30 years of existence. In addition, WOW has sponsored and organized numerous children’s events, all free of charge.
Our primary focus for 2007-2008 year is continuing to enrich the lives of our members and adult female Woods residents. We encourage all new residents to attend a meeting and discover new friends here and remind all long-standing residents that our monthly meetings are always open to welcome back old friends.
Meetings are generally held on the third Monday of each month (August through May), 7:00 PM at the Woods clubhouse.
