City of Jacksonville residential garbage, recycling,

& yard waste service standards

The Jacksonville municipal code sets the following standards for residential garbage, yard waste and recycling collection.

Pick-up day for trash and recycling is Wednesday. Your garbage, yard waste, or recycling should be placed curbside by 6:00 AM. on scheduled collection days only. If you put items for collection out the previous evening, please do NOT do so before 5:00 PM.

Pick-up day for yard waste is Thursday. Yard waste is collected separately from garbage. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, shrub trimmings, palm fronds, and tree limbs, etc., cut to five feet in length or shorter.

All residential waste must be placed at curb or roadway within five feet of the edge of the traveled portion of the street.

Residential garbage and yard waste must be in standard 20- or 32-gallon cans or in sealed plastic bags, with each container weighing no more than 40 pounds.

Garbage cans must have tight-fitting lids, no sharp or jagged edges, and an intact bottom. Call your contractor to arrange for removal of broken garbage cans.

Garbage and yard waste may not be stacked over water or gas meters, under low-hanging tree limbs or utility wires, or beside mail boxes.

Furniture and other bulky items may be put curbside with your household garbage.

In the interests of safety, all broken glass must be wrapped in newspaper or sealed and placed in garbage cans only.

Tree limbs must be cut to five feet or shorter, no larger than six inches in diameter, and stacked parallel in piles.

Collection of yard waste is limited to five cubic yards weekly – approximately one pick-up truckload or three large bags.

Household hazardous waste cannot be collected curbside. Residents may take items to the City Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 2675 Commonwealth Avenue, which is open Tuesdays from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM and from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM; the facility is also open the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

A maximum of four tires (off the rims) can be collected curbside. They should be placed at the curb on garbage-collection day. Car parts will not be picked up at any time.

Collection of building materials is limited to one cubic yard (approximately two construction wheelbarrows) weekly; pieces may not exceed five feet in length.

When blue recycling bins reach capacity, additional recyclables should be placed beside the bin in brown paper bags. If your recycling bin regularly overflows, please call and ask for an additional bin.

If you have major appliances for pick-up, please call JWC at the number below to schedule collection. Appliances should be placed curbside on the day JWC designates for pick-up.

Oil drums, 55-gallon drums, and 200-gallon drums will be collected curbside only when emptied and punctured to prevent fire hazard. In addition, the valves on propane tanks must also be removed prior to pick-up.
